Business Spotlight

If you like being outdoors, there are a lot of reasons to come to Alaska.  Sitka’s Secrets is a charter boat company my husband and I concocted in 1986.  We offer marine wildlife viewing charters in Sitka Sound.  Our objective is to get one-on-one with people, to help them appreciate what Alaska has to offer and recognize the importance of sharing Alaska’s resources with generations to come.

Everyone hopes wisdom comes with age. What have we learned after being in business in Alaska for 25 years?  How to be patient.  How to be opportunistic.  How to be respectful of all life from which we draw sustenance.  How what looks like a bunch of trees, overabundance of fish, or barren ground is not that simple.  Those trees, those fish, and that barren ground are already spoken for, and we should really be asking for permission prior to taking, but we don’t.

Being alive means we’re consuming something.  All we can do is try to minimize our impact.  We look forward to every charter because it gives us one more chance to do it right.  We hope we’re one of your reasons for coming to Alaska.

Alaska Nature Guides

Alaska Nature Guides: Based in Talkeetna, Alaska Nature Guides help guests experience the natural wonders of Alaska the best way they know how- on foot with a knowledgable guide.  Guests make a close connection to Alaska's natural landscape while moving under their own power and using all five senses. The company supports local community and conservation groups by donating time, money and materials to local projects such as the building of a community playground, sponsoring the Youth Conservation Corps, and volunteer trail days.  They teach Leave No Trace to youth groups and to their guests, and keep the area's they visit free of invasive plants and litter.  "People come to Alaska because of the "Alaska mystique", says owner Howard Carbone,  "We still have what other places have lost. Can we sustain it? Only if we make the effort."

Sitka’s Secrets is a husband and wife business venture.  We started off small and stayed that way.  Our goal was not to get rich, but to make a living with the smallest footprint.

Being on the ocean every day during the summer, Sitka’s Secrets charters is well aware of rising ocean temperatures, manmade ocean pollution and waste, and how all life forms are intrinsically linked to each other.

When we conduct wildlife viewing charters, our objective is not only to bring people closer to nature, but to do so with respect and appreciation.
